Manchester United Had Shock Summer Move For PSG Star Rejected

Manchester United had a stunning summer move for Kylian Mbappe rejected by Paris Saint-Germain which prompted the club to rethink their transfer strategy, according to reports. Jose Mourinho endured a rather miserable transfer window, signing three players – midfielder Fred, young full-back Diogo Dalot and backup keeper Lee Grant – but failing to land the new center-back he really wanted. Incredibly, the Mirror reports that United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward also made an audacious move to try and lure Mbappe to Old Trafford.

The teenager initially moved to the French capital from Monaco on loan last year, with his £160m transfer only formalized over the summer. He continues to be linked with a host of clubs after an impressive World Cup, with Real Madrid eyeing up the 19-year-old as a possible replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo at the Bernabeu.

United also made an inquiry over the summer but were turned down flat, and the setback prompted Woodward to rethink United’s entire approach to squad building. Under Mourinho, the club has often targeted older, established players on big contracts – such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexis Sanchez – but PSG’s deal for Mbappe highlighted how other European giants are prepared to sign and nurture young talent.

Rivals Manchester City, likewise, have developed a young and exciting team and Woodward has told Mourinho that the club needs to take a more self-sustaining approach. While the Portuguese coach would have sanctioned the departures of Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, Woodward and United’s bosses believe they are world-class players and need a better platform to express themselves – the same sort of platform Mbappe has been given at PSG.
