Everton FC news: Marco Silva will leave Toffees in the lurch…

It’s finally done.

Everton have sacked Sam Allardyce just a few days after the end of the season, with Marco Silva lined up to replace him.

Watford are still trying to have their say in Everton’s desire, with an official complaint submitted to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach for Silva by the Merseyside club; The Times say officials from both clubs met last month but Watford rejected Everton’s compensation package.

It’s in Everton’s interests to reach an agreement with Watford should they wish to hire Silva early this summer, and the club hope to get a deal done soon to appease a fanbase who have had to endure a campaign only just short of miserable.

But, Everton fans, savour the highs Silva brings your club as they will be fleeting – a drop in the ocean for a man who is loyal only when being so benefits himself.
Watford started the season with some impressive performances under Silva

Silva should be grateful his reputation remains intact, despite taking Hull down to the Championship and leading Watford to just five points from a possible 30 towards the end of his spell in Hertfordshire.

Watford blamed ‘a Premier League rival’ in their statement announcing the sacking of Silva, and it was as if the club had been learning from Silva’s own playbook in how to keep your reputation intact.

Even when the Hornets had gone on a run of just one win in 11 matches Silva refused to accept he was at fault; injury problems, a lack of depth and refereeing decisions all came under the Portuguese’s microscope rather than his own abilities.

Still, there were some great moments at Vicarage Road.

In the first eight games of the season Watford played some of their best football in years, with dominating performances against established Premier League sides coming from a club who just a few years ago were flirting with administration and third division football.

But such brilliance was never going to last.

There is no reason to feel aggrieved that Silva saw Watford as a stepping stone for his own managerial ambitions, as they are a relatively small club in Premier League terms – and even in relation to some sides in the second tier.
Silva resigned as Hull manager following their relegation from the Premier League

But what does leave a black mark on the 40-year-old’s reputation is his lack of integrity. He wanted to leave after only 10 games in charge of Watford, just a few months in to a two-year contract that did not include a break clause.

Everton are one of the clubs who can claim to be bigger than Watford, and it is no surprise Silva would want to move one step higher up the food chain.

But pushing for the move so soon and not waiting at Watford for a while longer has shown Silva’s true colours – he’s an ambitious individual who will do anything he can to move forward on his own terms, leaving destruction in his wake.

And for the Everton supporters, here’s a question: is working at Goodison Park Silva’s dream? Surely not.

Everton are another step higher on a food chain Silva intends to be at the top of, whether in one year or a decade from now.

He’s already shown he’s willing to screw over one club to benefit himself, so beware Everton – when a bigger team comes calling for Silva, his head will be turned and the unmistakeable signs of positivity and progress will come crashing down.

And Silva will walk out the Goodison Park wreckage remaining on an upward trajectory that remains somehow unsullied despite all the bad that has come before.
